At op Oost, nature forms the foundation of everything we do. From the ingredients on your plate to the way we grow our crops – we work in harmony with Texel's landscape. We're proud to take the next step in our sustainable operations. In De Waelde Tuin, our historic 6-hectare orchard, we're starting work this year on an agroforestry trial plot of over 1.5 hectares. Through this project, we want to show how food production and nature restoration can go hand in hand.
Regenerative farming: beyond organic
Our philosophy centres around a way of growing that strengthens nature rather than depleting it. Our restaurant was awarded a Green MICHELIN star, and with this agroforestry project, we're building further on our sustainable vision. Thanks to support from the Nature and Environment Federation of North Holland, we can create an inspiring example of regenerative agriculture on Texel. This trial plot will not only become a valuable source for our restaurant and future shop, but also a place where nature lovers and interested visitors can learn about agroforestry and sustainable food production.
What is agroforestry?
Agroforestry is a clever agricultural system where trees, shrubs and crops together form a resilient ecosystem. This offers countless benefits: it increases biodiversity, enriches the soil, improves water management and contributes to climate mitigation through CO₂ storage. In our agroforestry plot, we let nature do its work and bring guests, animals and crops together in sustainable balance.
At home, you can apply this by combining different plant species in your garden. Think about planting fruit trees with ground-covering herbs like thyme or chives, or growing climbing plants like grapevines against a pergola
Eco farm camping De Waeldernis: camping in nature's rhythm
Our trial plot is being developed around our eco farm campsite, which opens its doors on 1st May. Here you'll experience the tranquillity and wild edible nature of Texel. We deliberately choose a small-scale approach without large motorhomes or play equipment. "We want to create a place where 'getting away from it all' takes on new meaning. A farm shop: Texel produce from our own garden
Alongside our campsite, we're also opening a shop this spring where we'll offer our own harvest and farm produce. Valerie: "This shop isn't just for our camping guests, but especially for Texel locals too. We're bringing together sustainably produced goods, from fruit and herbs to vegetables, dairy and juices. A place where Texel's honest produce comes together."
